It is indeed the Liddle, which runs peaty red much of the time, unlike the Border Esk which it joins at the head of the Willow Pool. Once renowned for its sea trout, like the Border Esk and other Solway rivers, it has, in recent seasons, seen a dramatic decline in sea trout stocks.
The photograph was taken just above Penton Linns, not far above the Black Kist ...... now there's a proper name for a sea trout pool!
