Taking Pictures of Flies
Digital Camera Set to Macro - often given as a symbol like a flower - you should be able to focus fine up to around 10cm (4") of the fly in the vice.
The focus should be set to 'auto'.
General tips for pictures of flies, and it follows, for Step-by-Steps:
1. Always keep the fly (or the construction in progress) in the vice.
2. Better to use the same neutral background in most cases, shows off the individual intricacies of the tying better
3. Set up your tying vice on the desk/workstation such that you can have that background in place all of the time whilst tying, ie, keep its position the same all through any individual tying
4. Set out the all materials for the tying so they are easy to hand, and you are not scrabbling around for things in the middle of the construction
5. Adequate overhead lamp lighting of the construction in the vice, and DON'T use the flash of the camera
6. Start by doing some test pictures with the bare hook or tube in the vice, to check that you have the following:
7. Hook or tube in focus
8. Enough seen in the picture to cover what you wish to show, but with minimal extra background - ie get as close to the hook/tube/fly so that it comfortably almost fills the frame
9. That you are able to repeat the picture if necessary, with the same or better result.
10. Steady your hand when taking the pictures - this helps you repeatedly take pictures from the same position relative to the fly in the vice, and helps the 'auto' focussing function of the camera, and gives repeatable results - I mostly steady the camera by resting the ulnar border (border of the hand opposite the from the thumb) of my hand or forearm on the left side of the vice itself - as I tie Right handed.
