Here is a Photo of a Spey Ghillie in action on the Dee. Does anyone recognise the beat and pool ?

Agree VC,
Birch trees and rock could be Dinnet, Lower invercauld. There are a few places above Aboyne that look like that but I could not say exactly where.

Yes it does remind me of Crathie- the top end of McLaren's to be precise.

Yes it is the Dinnet beat and the fisherman is Willie Mearns, Ghillie on the Delagyle beat of the Spey. Funninly enough, I've just looked up the Dinnet beat of FishDee and they have this very photo and another similar on their beat photos. I got mine last Friday from Willie along with another of a 48lb Cock Salmon caught at Delegyle in 1982 by a lady who is almost the same size as the fish, although she is slightly lighter in shade....... I'll better let him know tomorrow and he'll be chasing them for appearance fees................. ;D

He's throwing some line In reality probably a wee bit too much and the more I think about the photo, perhaps he was playing up to the crowd............... Cracking fly by the way Swift, I love the blue hackle and matched with the purple, a great combination.

Its one of my bogey pools, I cant seem to catch a fish out of it. Cracking piece of water to fish though. Pol Slacht at the top of the beat looks similar so I was hedging my bets.

When I viewed the photo the other day I had no idea of the beat, but the fisherman had to be Willie Mearns. And there again I thought no wrong river and casting off his right shoulder. I hope he enjoyed his day on the Dee. JW

Thanks very much I've got more time at the vice now that the prelim exams are over so i'm looking forward to tying up a good selection . That's the first fly i've tied for a while now. 3 months left of school ;D then a whole summer of fishing and fly-tying before i start work . ATB Ryan

I've also struggled to get a fish in Bruich, whereas others merely have to dangle a fly in to catch a fish. The most famous feature of the pool is the Green Stone, a huge light-coloured rock set into the bed of the river in the middle of the pool. You can often see fish lying on this stone, indeed the saying was that if you could see the Green Stone there were no salmon in the Dee that year The Green Stone is a hot spot in the pool, and Willie is doing the right thing by not wading too deep and casting a long line at a shallow angle despite the narrowness of the river at that point. Fishing this pool at night is always exciting, it is a great spot for roding woodcock and when the light goes it is all to easy to hook the far bank and imagine you have hooked a whale as the current streams line off the reel! It is a good cast for sea trout and they play very well in the strong current. Ex-Dinnet now Bywell ghillie Gary Hillary had a 30+lb May fish in this pool four years ago.
