As we have VC's photographic competition going on all summer I thought it could be useful to generate hints for taking photo's. Hopefully these hints will result in even better photo's and also an increased enjoyment in the photography side of fishing. (I will state now though that I am not an expert and these hints are easily picked up from books/internet etc. Others too should share their own thoughts/ideas/tips etc.) Hint No 1... Rule of Thirds If you divide a page into thirds, vertically and horizontally you end up with your lines intersecting in four places. It is at one of these intersections that the main focus of your interest should be placed on the photo. (as a general rule.) The following link shows an easy graphic of what this is about and also gives illustrations with photo's. digital-photography-school.com/blog/rule-of-thirds/This is a very simple thing to think about when taking a photo and does make a difference.

Good Tip H.
I'm no expert, but I always make an effort to 'frame' a photo as best I can, usually to howls of "get on with it" from my wife and kids!

And in addition, try to fill your frame with the subject. I like to get nice and close to the guy with the fish..

The crop function in tools can also go a long way to help compose a better picture.

Another tip for 'landscape photo' is not to have a photo half sky and half land. Better to have two thirds of one and a third of the other. eg two thirds land and one third sky (or vice versa)
Totally agree with the above tips.

Good thread Highland fisher.
My two rules of thumb are to frame picture with something, and to have main subject just off centre (similiar to your thirds tip).
Most important tip is to carry a camera!! The opportunities often just present themselves. Irritating if you do not have a camera when they do.

Must admit though that I rarely take it with me when I go out fishing. Will need to think about changing that this year, especially as I hope to be fishing the loch as well as the river. Cheers
