No neither of these. The estuary of this system produced approx 10,000 salmon - 100 tonnes in the early 19th century, but none now. Between 2001 and 2004 about 1.25m € was spent to rescue the salmon from extinction. TC

Not that I'm great at crosswords normally but just no gettin this. It certainly looks Germanic.

Allysshrimpl got it 100% but you all gradually homed in. What a wiki-salmon this forum is
A full page from the GRAPHIC, an illustrated weekly newspaper dated 1871, available on Amazon as an original.
Chateau de Chenonceau is on the River Cher, off the mighty Loire. It became the bone of an argument between Catherine de Medici and Diane de Poitiers. I visited here in the mid eighties and local advice was that you could catch salmon if you had local knowledge.
The Cameron reference is to our prime minister and how he was " heaved up the bank " by the wee Frenchman at the recent summit. The French and Germans had apparently decided to go with the separate pound anyways, and Cameron willingly came to the gaff.
If I find my watercolour of the chateau I shall post it.
