Would love to hear your experiences regarding sending rods by post as I don't seem to have found a method yet that doesn't leave me exasperated.
Last time I was quoted 30 odd quid to have it sent - signed for and insured to the value of £500. After a lot of "discussion" I finally managed to get through to the nice lady, I had sent one before and it cost under a tenner. Oh right, you must have sent it standard parcel,. Halleluiah, all done for £9.45.
Back in today and guess what, same nice lady, who's obviously on commission, reminded her about our previous conversation, to no avail.
P.O. no longer do standard parcel with insurance so had to go parcel force, - express 48 @11.96 plus enhanced compensation to value of £500 @14.70 Total cost £26.66.
Anyone got a better way?

Postage is not cheap these days. However if the rod is valuable i.e around £500... £27 doesn't seem overly expensive for postage and insurance. I can't offer any alternative I'm afraid.

I've sold a few rods lately and it takes a lot of reading the small print. Royal Mail/ParcelFarce change their rules and prices weekly!! I now use for larger rods interparcelApprox £12(prob about £15 for £500 rod) for a 4 piece salmon rod, courier posted, tracked and insured. Delivery in 48hrs. Use the quote service for the weight and dimensions, Add 20% VAT, and for insurance add 2% of rod value.

Thanks guys, I have been looking on eBay and have noticed rods of similar value being sent for anything from £4.99 up to a tenner. I would imagine they would be sent insured. Will be interesting to see what B & W charge to return it to me.

I suspect they're traders who have accounts with certain couriers. Making it cheaper than for Joe public. Otherwise, if they are private sellers can't imagine the rods would be insured at that price.
