Are there any members of the clergy on here to perform the "last rites" should the forum die.

Hopefully it wont Tenet.
Agreed, it has been very quiet over recent months and I'm as guilty as the next member for being somewhat 'slow' to post recently and regularly. Maybe it's because nothing much has been happening for me personally on the fishing front due to far more important matters happening in my life such as work, family and health - as I daresay it is for quite a few members. That for me is the bottom line.
I look at the forum simply as a great resource of information which can be tapped into whenever and for whatever reason - especially the photo coverage of various beats / rivers etc. If someone is looking for advice or comment (on whatever topic) then usually that will be given - OK, the 'thread' might not go to 5 pages in length but the chances are what limited amount of advice is given will be good / accurate advice.
Unlike other 'bigger' fora - there's no apparent need (or appetite come to that) to empire build or to stroke ego's - I don't think the guy's on this forum are into all of that guff.
This forum is simply a nice wee communication tool between a small (comparatively) group of good fishers who are capable of freely giving advice based on knowledge - and we have some great beat coverages ! If anyone wishes to 'join in' - they can, no pressure.
What irks me is the amount of members who clearly access the forum without ever posting - c'mon guys, you know who you are and it really doesn't hurt - honestly !
It may be quiet at times but I'm pretty sure that this resource is here to stay.

I am always looking in, but don't always post. The season for me has been a write-off due to other things, but I enjoy reading the posts and as Andy says it is an excellent resource. To be honest, I quite like the quiet and slow pace on here. The other big forum (you know the one!) is pants anyway.

It may be quiet at times but I'm pretty sure that this resource is here to stay. The forum usually goes quiet towards the end of season no surprise because fishers are getting themselves out on the river to make the best of their time before season close. In 20 years time this may be called The Hardcore Salmon Fishing Forum. Compared to others it is populated by keen fishers who know what is useful to others and what is "blethering". If it seems quiet then wait a while or start some debate of your own. Much better than bigger fora where any posting generates a percentage of "yap yer head off" banter. This forum is a serious salmon fishers forum. If there is nothing great to talk about, get down the river and catch some, or refer to the great tomb of knowledge already on here. Tweedcast

I am always looking in, but don't always post. Same here. Sometimes there is nothing to add. Sometimes comment is worthwhile. Sometimes I'm too busy salmon fishing (I wish! ) The lack of everyday posts that are "just for the sake of posting something new" does not sound the death knell of a resource such as this. When new topics or updates to threads arrive, they usually have some substance. Usually, a legitimate question asked here is answered with both honesty and knowledge. The people here are genuine, helpful, dedicated and as TC said, hardcore salmon anglers. A quick look at the January 2014 fly swap thread will prove that. One of the things about the advent and subsequent growth and integration of the internet into everyday lives is that some people seem to feel the need to share things that really don't need sharing. What you had for breakfast? I don't care. Unless it's included as part of a review of a fishing hotel/holiday and the grub was either epic or rubbish. So, no need for a priest, just place the forum upright facing the current and wait for her to kick back into life. Winter's coming, I can hear the regulars blowing the dust from their keyboards now....

I hope it doesn't die as it has been a great source of info for me and has provided an opportunity to meet fellow fishers. Without the forum, that would never have happened.
Like others, I check in almost daily to see if anyone has caught a fish (usually Bill or Graham!) but as I haven't been out much at all myself, I don't post.
Some of the non-fishing guff that's posted in other fora is dire.
Long live the salmo.proboard!

Who wants to know what you put in your sandwiches Cheers Doug

Very much alive and well Very pleased to hear it Bill - It just seemed that over the past few months things had gone very quiet. Agree with comments above regarding inane threads. Who wants to know what you put in your sandwiches Cheers Doug Me I knew exactly where you were coming from when you originally posted Doug, and I took it as a genuine concern from a longstanding and much valued forum member. Your right, it has be very quiet over recent months and, same as you, I hoped this wouldn't be the 'start of the end' sort of thing - we have seen this happen on other fora in recent seasons. Then a man git's to thinkin ............. naw, that wont happen here, there's more than enough intelligent 'dedication' ready to hand on this forum for what it needs to be - which is a 'meeting place' with pictures and information - with absolutely no pressure to post. We will always make room at the table for new (particularly novice) members whilst continuing our policy of ridiculing in public (in a friendly manner of course) any current members if and when warranted ! I loved Dan's analogy of holding the forum in an upstream current - "So, no need for a priest, just place the forum upright facing the current and wait for her to kick back into life. Winter's coming, I can hear the regulars blowing the dust from their keyboards now...." Brilliant !

I find this forum most interesting, and informative. For a few years I reported on my local river, but pressure from above meant this had to stop.I have met a few forum members on my visits to the Spey, all good, helpful people. The only downside is I came across Spaterunner, only joking Geoff. I look at the forum every day. Long may it survive.

Yep its been quiet and so have I!
Nothing much to report tbh, as I haven't exactly had the "year of the salmon" and canny report on getting nowt too often, as peeps won't read them. I guess there are web sites for scenery pictures on the internet lol.
However if I may be truthful and give my feelings about the site and reporting a day on the river. Can I ask that the bloody (lazy) "like" button be removed and have a human reply on the report. That way you are getting involved, in as much you have read and made a comment no matter how short or repetitive the comment is.
Nothing more galling when one has went to all the bother of uploading a report/pictures into the sma hours of the night, burning candles at both ends, having to drink whisky to stay alert, only to see so few reply, and with some "liking" it (by the dreaded button.
Just my constructive criticism, and nothing personal.
So in essence when I happen upon a salmon, and stick a report in or anyone else for that matter, get yer fingers out your erse and reply ok or else!!
There!

The value of this forum for me is not so much posting photos of the odd fish I catch ( mainly because I struggle with the hassle of Photobucket and I don't really catch all that many anyway these days) but for the comradeship and information that is widely available on a whole range of angling related subjects. The forum tends to take off communication wise during the close season when we all have cabin fever waiting for the start of the next season.Interestingly yesterday whilst fishing on the Don I met one of the newer members of this forum and we had a healthy chat about vintage fishing reels. We also talked about the value of the forum. Last season and earlier in this season I was able to put names to a lot of faces on the forum at a forum meeting and I also greatly enjoyed helping a new forum member to get started on flytying providing support, guidance, and materials and through the forum was able to see the fantastic results of his early efforts. I also participated for the first time in the forum 'Fly Swap' I also regularly communicate with some forum members through the forum(the messaging system is very useful). Whilst occasionally we view some issues differently the forum is a great means of getting the views of others and is usually conducted in a very friendly way. I would be very sad to see the forum disintegrate. I think most of us have had a fairly trying season in 2014 but no doubt some of us will dig out a few photos in the coming months or raise a few topical issues to keep the forum alive. I do hope so. At least the 'Like' button proves that at least someone is reading your post Kenny. I have to admit to using 'facebook' a bit more for communications but your point is valid and perhaps we should all have a bit more dialogue to prove that we value the 'forum method of communication.

Yes I've been quiet this year, which is probably a reflection of my salmon fishing season:-
March - 2 days on Dryburgh on the Tweed, with 2 kelts on a spinner
Spring/Summer - no water, so I went bass fishing
September - had 2 days booked on the Annan, but river was at drought level
October - managed a couple of 1/2 days on the Welsh Dee, and a 14lb fish on the fly.
So a very quiet year by normal standards.
I hope the forum continues, as said before it's a great source of information about rivers and beats most of us have never fished, with good advice on tactics etc.
As always, new blood and enthusiasm is often needed to keep things moving, so step forward and give us your contributions please!

I have played very active parts on other fora that sadly died. I must confess at times I look at this forum and fear from what appears to be a lack of input it might have been going the same way. I really hope that it doesn't. There appears to be a wealth of knowledge and experience on here and when we all 'club this together' then we all walk away that much richer. This at least in my opinion is the very essence of how forums work. You add you little bit of knowledge and walk away with the combined knowledge of at least a dozen other highly active members. Some of you I have met and have found you to be truer than the true gentlemen that you appear to be on here. Others I have yet to meet but am sure that the 'true gentleman' theme will follow. The other plusses on this forum are that I get to see Mark 'mzfishing' make weekly improvements in his fly dressing which goes from strength to strength. I get taught some Jock lingo by Bill Cook, worlds like heed, tatties and neeps. I get to call Salmondan, Lieutenant Dan you got new legs and best of all I get to slag off Dave Lunesman ands Kenny Carr on an hourly basis - quality forum this, pure quality PS If I missed any of you out please don't be offended. I love the rest of you too - well most of you at least www.silversalmon.co.uk

If there is a Forum fishing, beer drinking, whisky swilling event on the cards then bring it on baby I am well up for it. I am on the Dee in the New Year so cannot do February. I might be getting assessed again in March so April would suit me but I will go along with the rest of our merry crew. Let me know what you all fancy and I will get some flies done especially for it. www.silversalmon.co.uk

Not so certain about the group hug though, depends on the time of year and ambient temperatures (and possibly on the amount of single malt imbibed). Lt. Dan (new legs)
