Could we all pressure Fishscotland and SEPA to release 6 hourly updates to water levels - it must surely be a setting on a fiddly gismo thing. 12 hourly reports are just no good for fishers.
How about we all send an email on Thursday am to ;
gail@fishtweed.co.uk (or your local river email address)
and
foi@sepa.org.uk

Yes, four updates a day would be far better. Especially handy for those people who want to pop out fishing for a few hours after work.

Are there webcams that monitor river levels around? If not it's very simple and cheap technology to use and would appear to be ideal

Great idea Malcom,,surely the technicalities can't be too difficult to alter,,,12 hour period is pretty inept,,but better than nothing.

The SEPA readings are taken every 15 minutes, so it would be quite simple for them to obtain the extra data.

Those graphs only get updated daily, if you are lucky. Sometimes they dont bother updating them, usually when there has been some rain.

A Webcam pointed at a gauge in a secure place could update every couple of seconds, automatically with little maintenance and minimal cost. It could also show what the water looked like as well as its height

Yes, that would be very useful indeed.

I'd just like a recent graph o fthe water levels so I know if its rising it aint going to fall too suddenly. The spate on Sunday morning on Tweed/Annan/Nith was a good example - the graph looked like a cardiograph ! Must have risen three feet in about 4 hours on the Tweed. M

I've referred elsewhere to the Wye and Usk Foundation webcams, which provide a good model www.wyeuskfoundation.org/conditions/waterheights.phpThe remarkably high number of hits that the Wye and Usk Foundation get on these pages suggests to me that the costs could be recouped through sponsorship/advertising on the websites carrying the images. Otherwise the institutions promoting tourism might be persuaded to contribute. The webcams can be used to promote good relations with canoeists and other river users (and the opportunity for some subtle humour) www.wyeuskfoundation.org/navigation/index.phpMark

I've found 7 others who will do the £6 each for the two upper Tweed stations, as long as we alone get the 6 hourlies. With a budget approaching £750k I thought the River Board might chip in the £168 extra for more regular gizmo thing level updates. Or FishScotland, or split it three ways and we'll do the £8 each for the whole river. Seriously, the data is either useful or not and as it stands I think it is not useful. If one travels to the Tweed or other river with data 12 hours old anything could have happened, the risk at 6 hours is much less than half. M
