Use this thread to post links to any good Youtube videos you want to share. This is a link to a film showing hundreds of tweed salmon waiting for a spate to run up a tributary of the Teviot. uk.youtube.com/watch?v=_jhtAflyg-wSalmon waiting to spawn in the River Teviot, November 2007.
The Tweed Foundation has purchased a small camera which has enabled footage to be taken during the autumn. Due to the abnormally low water conditions fish had been unable to ascend up most of the tributaries this autumn and, as the attached video clip shows, were stacking up at the mouths of their home waters waiting for the right conditions.
This underwater video clip was taken in mid November at the bottom of a tributary on the Teviot Water where it was estimated there were around 1,000 fish waiting for a rise in the water height so that they could reach their spawning grounds. To get the footage, an underwater camera was attached to the end of a telescopic pole. The fish shown here are mostly Salmon, although there is 1 large Sea-trout that can be observed near the end of the video clip.
Part of this film was used by the BBC's "Autumnwatch" programme in November whilst filming spawning fish on Tweed.

That does look cold! Interesting to see all the ice floes, as I walked the dog along my local river today and noticed something of interest. Solid ice had formed in the margins and in larger areas of slack water, as you would expect. What surprised me was what seemed to be large areas of underwater ice seem to have formed in the shallower and faster flowing pool necks. I saw this phenomenon in 2 or 3 places, and the only expalnation I could think of is that smaller lumps of ice floating down river had become stuck or grounded on the river bed, and there had been a progressive build up of ice (over a 20 - 30m length of river bed), which ultimately caused the water level to rise and flow over this submerged layer of ice. Has anyone noticed this phenomenon before?

Just googled "ice on river bed" and this came up: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anchor_ice#Anchor_ice_in_riversAnchor ice will generally form in fast-flowing rivers during periods of extreme cold. Due to the motion of the water, ice cover may not form consistently, and the water will quickly reach its freezing point due to mixing and contact with the atmosphere. Ice platelets generally form very quickly in the water column and on submerged objects once conditions are optimal for anchor ice formation.

Has anyone noticed this phenomenon before? Is this what you mean John? The photo shows a build up of ice on the river bed in a riffle in the River Ayr a couple weeks ago. It has been happening a lot this year.

Yes that's exactly what I mean - the ice show up as a lighter colour tahn the surrounding river bed.

Here is a salmon I caught on the Rimouski river, in Québec. About twelve pounds.

Well done, that is a nice fresh fish. Was it caught on a dry fly?

Looks fun is an understatement - absolutely nothing like top of the water sport whether it be trout, salmon or bass.
