I attended today's opening ceremony with Bill Cook and Ross MacDonald at Potarch.
It was well attended with some 300 people there to see F1 legend Ross Brawn make the "First Cast". It was a good day out and the weather was kind to us for a change, especially with all the rain recently. I made wee video of the opening. With some dodgy photos and shaky video clips to work with, this is what I came up with.

Deedon... thanks for taking the time to produce this little 'movie'. It was good to get a wee bit of info on the opening. Hope yourself and all the others enjoyed their day. Any fresh fish?

Well done Craig. Nice wee video. Fish Dee website indicates 9 fish off the river today...a promising start given the high water conditions on the lower river.

Just to my way of thinking but a strange choice to open the Dee, and a stranger choice for 'honours' Japanese team,Italian team, French team? Done really well for himself, really well, but surely we have some Scots could do this??? Just read Botham opened the Teith??? C,mon.. Anyone else have views on this Kerry Chalmers, Cynic...

I think Ross Brawn was fishing Dinnet when I was on Deecastle. I recognise the casting style....

Unlike WG I have never been a motor racing enthusiast and I must admit to having never heard of Ross either so you are not alone Kerry. Personally I'd prefer to see a local person open the river or some Scottish personality more widely known. For example the Deveron has been opened recently by Ally McBain and is to be opened next week by Catriona Shearer of the Scottish BBC News team.

Thanks Craig. Dinny gie up the day job lol - Joking. I see Bills back!! As regards the choice of opening celebrity. It is only a PR exercise and he is a big name in the sporting world and most folk will know who he is. Difficult to get one that will suit everyone or someone that most folk know. So its never going to be a total crowd pleaser in that sense! We could have had Jim Davidson or Robson Green. Then again............ My choice would have been this guy: www.rexhunt.com.au/adventure (tic) At least you would have got a laugh and some great banter from him. Seems well attended and nice to see fish being caught on the river at that height on opening day. Thanks for sharing Craig.

I take it you will approve of Euan McIlwraith opening the Spey? Of the two, I think you got the better deal. Mind you, Mark Stephen tends to cover the Kenmore melee. The Robin Hall & Jimmie McGregor of environmental radio. From one 'opening day reporter' to another, thanks for the report Craig.

Well perhaps it is just as well that we don't all know everything. We can't all be as wordly wise as you WG ! Life would be pretty dull and boring otherwise. Euan McIlwraith seems a good choice for the Spey. Better than the first choice I think ?

' The stuff you see in front of you is watter! I call it H2o because I am an academic but watter will do for the purposes of the lesson' ' Oh! Williegunn that is way over my dumb blonde head' ' Well Kerry dont worry I will keep it simple......now the lever blah blah...stop n' block blah blah...D loop blah...terminal velocity blah blah you dont want to be doing that blah blah throws on a wee bit Latin...blah blah....' ' Williegunn this is fantastic you are a fishing God.....' ' thank you Kerry that will be a thoosand poond!' Kerry Chalmers (dumb blonde)

I think the idea is to get someone who will bring in the tourists and maybe make the news outside of Scotland, Beefy has done that, not sure about the others, better choices than politicians self promoting by a long way.

Williegunn you're surely a rich vein of knowledge, unfortunately nobody loves a know all! I am kinda disappointed at you Wiliegunn after seeing you are an instructor. I can imagine the scenario if I or another fished with you.... ' Hello, I’m Williegunn the instructor' 'Hi! I’m Kerry Chalmers the daftie’ ' Hello Kerry now what kind of rod do you have?' ' I have a B/ W, will that do?' ' Sorry no! They are rubbish!' 'Oh! This is my reel' ' They are rubbish too!' 'Oh! I’m sorry....' ' Never mind they’ll do for today, Katie' ' Its Kerry!' 'Oh right!' ' Williegunn this is fantastic you are a fishing God.....' ' Thank you Kerry that will be a thoosand pond!' Bruce and Walker rods are great. Salmon fishing is easy, stand on the dry bit, chuck it into the wet bit. The difficult bit is getting yourself onto a good beat at a good time. Remember three things, this is only an internet forum, not the real world, a spell checker works well, and finally Google really is your friend.

If I still had my Dick you would have been sorted out! I use a Barker and Wallace rod! Salmon fishing is very hard! Last time I fished with you, you told me to stand in the water, not on the dry bit??? You told me the beat was the best??? I never cought anything.... Some Ghillie you!
