At this time of year I usually take stock of the previous year and get my shopping list of items to get for the coming season. Well after only one trip out last season, it won't take long to sort the gear out, I bought some hooks and intend to tie up some flies in readiness. It is minus 6 outside this morning, not a breath of wind and it looks like it might snow, lets hope the fish have spawned and we can hope for the future. No plans yet, but if my health continues to improve, then I have plans to re visit the Dee, I want to try the scenic Mar lodge estate. The Tay is another I plan to visit, Dalguise was on my radar in past seasons, but I never got there, so hopefully will this year. My local North and South Esks are on the radar as are the Isla and Ericht, so plenty to aim at.

A lot of my clients in spite of having travelled around a lot and spent daft amounts of money have largely ended up with empty pockets and even emptier nets. A few trips to the Eden saved my own bacon and I did relatively OK. Having said this with an extended lower back problem, now sorted and organising my wedding in September, now sorted too I did not get out anywhere near as often as I would in more regular years. The sea trout numbers on one of my beats on the Lune were a bloody disaster. In spite of taking a rod on one of the lower beats this year I did not fish it all. The reported numbers for combination of the 3 beats which are all part of the same association are the worst on record. I will of course be flogging it to an angry foam this year. Historically it has always had very good numbers but typical of the Lune it is having difficulties. Burnie I wish you and everybody else on here all the very best. May next year be kind to all

Hiya Burnie, it was the Eden at Carlisle. The association water has taken me quite a few years to figure out and in all fairness I have still only scratched the surface. There really is loads to go at. It is cheap as chips. Still produces with some consistency. A lot of anglers started to swerve it when it went CCR. I stopped wanting to kill fish many years ago though so for me it isn't really an issue. Probably just as well really as I am not very good at casting and fishing and struggle to catch a cold.

I have seen that river, but not fished it, maybe one day.

Carlisle Anglers only charge £170.00 to fish their whole beat. There is absolutely loads of water. You can also day ticket it for thirty quid. The beat runs through the city centre so some of it is not all that pretty. For the most part though you would not know that there was so much going on around you and there are some really pretty pieces too. The vast majority of these pools, certainly the dozen or so that I regularly fish make excellent fly water. There are actually 27 pools to go at and some of them I haven't even wet my waders in yet. If you ever contemplate fishing there then please shout me and I will offer some more targeted information. For the time being though here is a link to their Website www.carlisleanglingassociation.org.uk/index.html

Looks like a decent bit of fishing Geoff. Good to see the Broon Highlander and Something Salty still being legally embraced.

Not long now, I intend to walk some of the local river in the next week and see what damage has been done since the last flood before I book a rod.

I hope everyone has survived the storm, last night. Here in Lancashire it was bad, but looking at the national news it's been terrible in Scotland.

The Lune hit 14ft 9" yesterday on the gauge at Caton. The Met Office seems to have taken to giving these events rather cutesy names like Daphne and Mildred. For me it diminishes just how bloody dangerous these storms can be and frequently are. I will be out on the Lune really soon as I plan to fly my drone down my numerous beat and create some video footage. I dread to think what I am going to find. One thing I am fairly confident of though is that it will not be spring fish.

The rivers have risen a fair bit but it's certainly milder than its been. I expect the first Tay springer will follow shortly.

Maybe that wee bit too early for the Southie Burnie, but you never know. North Esk the more likely to produce a clean fish.
