Welcome to '74 blondie and pricey - or should that be smashie + nicey ? Blondie - some of the border bandits should get back to you on your imminent Ettrick sortie - being a heilanman I can be of little assistance. Mind yer camera as we could do with some Ettrick foties Gav - the Wye + Usk posse will no doubt have you whipped into shape in the very near future - in the meantime fire away on the "Getting Started" board. Thanks for introducing yourselves - appreciated. regards STip

Hello to all, After 30 years of dry fly for trout I took up Salmon fishing last year. I am a visiting member of Hawick Angling on the Teviot and managed to land a coloured 7 pounder last year fishing a 12'6'' rod single handed! I have progressed onto a 14'4'' rod now and have started trying to unlearn my trout casting and learn the Roll, single and double spey. I wish I had bothered to join the forum prior to throwing £100+ at a useless multi-tip line (SA Ultra 4). Having read the tackle section and spoken to an angler on the Teviot, who has been kind enough to try to teach me how to cast with 2 hands, I have bought a Hardy Mach II intermediate. The line, unfortunately, is better than the user! I can cover the river at least, but I will be woefully out of my depth when visiting the Tay in the first week of September for my stag do Tight lines to all. John.

Welcome, John. What 14' DHer do you have? & do you think you'll be in a fit state to fish the Tay with a rod & line after your stag do?? The Hardy Mach II lines are very good, I hear (don't own one myself), and could be very well suited for the early September Tay, provided the current river levels ease off a bit! Mike

Hi Mike,
Having snapped the top piece of a Loomis 9' rod this year (they replaced the top piece free of charge but the postage was £50 for me to send it to the USA) I went for a Sage VT2. I like the American rods. The VT2 is a soft action but has plenty of guts! Loomis rods are fantastic but my casting isn't good enough for a faster acxtion salmon rod.
The Tay trip would have been on this year without a marriage! We went to Dalguise last year for 2 days and thought it was a fantastic place (once you get over the power of the current when wading). Hopefully one of our party of 6 might even get into a fish!!!
John.

It's good to settle into a rod that you like, as thereafter fishing itself becomes more comfortable, less effort, and more enjoyable, however many fish are contacted.
As for the faster actioned rods, I think it may just be getting the correct line to match the rod - they're not really harder to cast, but if you're just starting out with DH rods, you may need to stick within a certain comfort zone before moving on to give these other rod/line combos a go.
I've not fished Dalguise yet, but next spring may be a target to go for. Hope your party has a bit of action when you visit!
Mike

Hi John, and welcome to '74. Is Dalguise hosting your "stag do" September visit ? If so, it might be beneficial to inform the ghillie in advance as arrangements can be made to have some heavy duty bog roll made available for the party's use - should this be required. Hope you have a good time regardless of where you are fishing but, should you be at DG, in the interests of safety keep the bevvy merchants well clear of the Bridge Pool. regards STip

Thanks for the welcome STip. We're staying at Dunkeld House and thought it wise not to tell them what we were up for as we might lower the tone Aye, the Bridge Pool is a fearsome hole. 21 feet of swirling depth!! We're a party of retired old men and tired not so old traffic cops so I think the heads will be clear enough to keep the feet firmly anchored!!! John.

Hi guys, just joined here today so thought I'd best introduce myself. I'm Jack, a student from dundee uni. Iv been salmon fishing for about 6 years on the isla and ericht and hopefully other places in the future. Looking forward to reading/learning some good stuff on here and have already been enjoying some quality pictures and reports which have put me right in the mood. Cheers and all the best, Jack.

Hi Jack, You're very welcome here, Jack! look forward to some reports of the Isla & Ericht, and some nice pics of the pools & runs if you have any Meantime, I'm sure you will enjoy reading some of the other river reports on here, local to Dundee must be the Esks. There's a depth & breadth of experience on here that you can tap into anytime. Mike

Yo Crackerjack ! Not wishing to interrupt your studies but, as Mike says, a few photies of the Isla / Ericht might very well result in a wee opportunity to fish the South Esk during 'reading week' (week 6). Photies first mind !! regards STip

Welcome to the 74 lads, John it sounds like it will be a heelava doo on DalG. Stp knows the beat like the back of his three nuns tin so he should be able to give you pointers. I find the Mach II lines are fine and do the job. Like everything it comes down to the individual. " Now mind the speed traps " Jack, If you get as much time aff as Stp then you should be fishing the more productive river North Esk than the Isla. Not sure about the Ericht as i have never fished it. Stp will give you a student discount on Upper Careston Cheers Hornet
