I had a friend fish Carlisle 2 or 3 days ago. Said the wind was so strong he couldn't even stand upright let alone cast a fly. There are however fish around and there are reports of a 20lber taken either yesterday or the day before. I have a client fishing the Lower Eden for the next 3 days and he will report back.

Nice that Salmon are back in English rivers, when I lived down there 20 years ago the Hampshire Avon was about the only river that produced many with a few in the West Country rivers. I was a club bailiff on the river Trent and a couple of our members reported fish jumping in the river Trent, never heard of one being caught though.

I was a club bailiff on the river Trent and a couple of our members reported fish jumping in the river Trent, never heard of one being caught though. I predominantly fish the rivers of Northern England. The Eden is holding up relatively well in the grand scheme of things. It produces fish for me every year and I can usually rely on it for something. The Border Esk also has been extremely kind to me. The Lune has had a troubled few years with runs of fish becoming disturbingly patchy. You can find fish however if you are prepared to persist. I have a number of beats to go at both middle river and further down. If nothing is doing on one then it is usually a case of heading up or down river and trying the other. If neither is producing then its go home and kick the cat. A lot of anglers seem too ready to slate the Lune which I can understand but do find disappointing. While not without numerous challenges from things such as abstraction by the water company, avian predation and extended periods of long dry weather it is still a fine river and always worthy of a day or night out and even both if you have the stamina and are prepared to put in the graft.

I had a friend back in the 1970's who had a rod on the Wye and he went every week, I only ever remember him catching one, he brought into the pub to show me, I can still see that grin on his face to this day.

Apparently the Wye is in a real sorry state. Sewage release from the water company which they seem guilty of doing on pretty much a daily basis has severely impacted the river. My problem with this is that it is OK to threaten them with fines but if the fine is less than the cost of addressing the sewage issue at source then the companies will just accept the fine as a cost of doing business. 99 times out of a 100 they do not even face a fine and just bluff their way through it. The fish have enough to contend with without the added complication of thousand bowsers worth of shite being dropped into their environment on a frequent basis. A grim admittance but as a species humanity has overstayed its welcome on this planet.

Not that long ago politicians were bragging there were Salmon in the Thames, the biggest source of water for London and the South East is from this river, how long before typhoid and the like rears it's head in the city?

It's rained for most of the day, but very light so no movement yet in the river levels, no fish reported from the Esks, but some big fish coming from the Tay

I see Lower Kinnaird had a nice 20lb fish. And Garry on Kercock managed a couple, obviously not that size.

Getting on there is not that difficult either as a number of beats do have day ticket access

There's a little lift in the water overnight, not much, but it might bring a few fresh fish in, my recovery is coming along, hoping to wet a line soon.

I hope that your recovery is as quick and as full as possible. Good luck with everything. I hope your line wetting is a complete and utter success but if not at least that you enjoy yourself.

Finavon Castle had a fish today as did Kinnaber, not much water in the Esks, nothing reported yet from the Dee.

Funny old week, dull and drizzly, but the ground soaked up any wet, the rivers didn't move, 5 fish from the Esks, Finavon Castle leading the way with a 9 lb'er. 19 from the Tay with an impressive 20lb'er from Cargill, not a beat I know. The Dee had 24 with a 19lb'er from Craigandinnie top fish. The rivers Ness and Findhorn also had reasonable returns with 14 and 9 respectively. Most beats have rods available next week, so there's not huge numbers of anglers about.

Esk rivers rising slightly, nothing in the Dee or the Tay though, at least it's milder and the wind has dropped.

A rather bright day, the small lift in the water didn't seem to bring much up, a nice 4lb Sea Trout from Kinnaber yesterday the only Esk fish so fat. The other rivers seem quiet too just now.
